From idea to a working AI tutor in about a week
A training school’s trainers wanted students to have “someone with infinite knowledge in their pocket.” In about a week we turned that into a working AI tutor that narrates any PDF as a lesson and answers spoken questions about it. It became Explainr.
The idea
The trainers at Mark’s training school had a simple wish: feed in the course documents and let students interact with them, like having someone with infinite knowledge in their pocket. Audiobook tools could read material aloud, but nothing let a student stop and ask a question about what they’d just heard.
What we built
We scoped a fixed-price prototype and had it live in about a week.
- Any PDF becomes a lesson. Upload a document and the platform turns it into a structured lesson, with narration for every page.
- A tutor you can talk to. Students ask questions out loud and get spoken answers grounded in the material. We cut the wait for an answer from over seven seconds to two or three, so it feels like a conversation.
- It remembers the conversation. Every question and answer is kept for the lesson, so follow-up questions build on what was already discussed.
- A line to a human. Students can flag any page with a note for a trainer.
Ready for the big demo
Then came a major demo, a few days away. We agreed a short, fixed-price list of what mattered most and shipped it in two days:
- Explainr branding and the school’s logo
- Lesson controls: restart, volume and playback speed
- Lesson creation limited to staff
- An end-of-lesson summary of every question and note, ready for a trainer
- A guided walkthrough for first-time users
The result
A working AI tutor, ready for its big demo on time, that became Explainr. Mark’s review called the work “100/10.”
